Retainers
Retainers are custom-made, and usually consist of wires or clear plastic. Their purpose is to hold teeth in position after braces have realigned them. There is a risk, once the main phase of orthodontic treatment has been completed, that the teeth will return to their original position. Retainers help diminish this risk by holding the teeth in their new position for a prescribed length of time. This allows the surrounding periodontal fibres to adapt to the changes in the bone, minimizing any undesired tooth movement.
